I finally sat down and took the time to watch this video. Thank you for posting this. It reminded me why I always appreciated the hard work, political savy and dedication of the Black Panthers. It is unfortunate that the Black Power movement was portrayed as violent rebellion against white America. The Black Power movement was an attempt by Americans of African descent to reclaim their humanity and dignity in a society that refused to acknowledge the equality of all human beings. The brillance of their ten point plan was in its simplicity; they focused on providing people with access to resources that allowed them to meet their basic human needs, empowered people to have pride in their communities and themselves, and fought for political justice. If the Black Panthers were able to succeed and flourish their work would have actually benefited America. I think many more African Americans would have found their way out of poverty and lived more productive lives. Black youth would be provided with more self-sufficent productive role models, making criminality less attractive. Plus, the Black Panthers were working with other ethnic groups who were seeking to making positive changes in their community and white organizations who were adressing the issues of low-income and rural white americans. The Black Panthers were not perfect and had their share of problems, but they were extremely sucessful in giving hope and a concrete strategey to a community that was desparately seeking change.
