The Power of Human Diversity

I believe that we really are all one but that we are also not the same. The richness of the diversity of human cultures is like the beauty of the flower and plant diversity of the rain forest. Each culture adding its own brand of knowledge and complexity to the tapestry our collective consciousness. I read that there was once a community of people in the south pacific whose men could use their testicles to navigate their ships in the dark. I heard a myth that Hawaii came to be because a group of Africans dreamed of the most beautiful place in the world and levitated this land from the depths of the sea. Without this diversity we would not have the pyramids in one part of the world and Stonehenge in the other. I am always amazed at how human groups can take the same ideas, materials etc. and create such distinctive masterpieces. I believe it is important to acknowledge differences because it makes the importance of finding commonalities even greater and inspiring. The fact that people can be on opposite sides of the world, grow up in distinctly difference environments, yet share a love for hip-hop or whatever else is amazing. Because our differences are really expressions of the same common truths that govern our existence and discovering these common truths helps us to realize that we are really all one.

Happy International Worker's Day

Today, International Worker's Day celebrations are taking place around the world. In a great number of countries, May 1 involves a day of protests, gatherings and marches to raise awareness and advocate for worker's rights. But this largely isn’t the case in America. Currently, the United States, Canada and South Africa are three of very few countries who do not recognize International Worker’s Day as a holiday. The "Labor Day" we celebrate in September is America’s substitute for International… Continue

Angela Davis, Reproductive Justice and Restorative Justice

Recently, I have attended various forums addressing reproductive justice issues for woman in prisons. Prior to going to these forums, I didn’t have a strong knowledge base about this area. But I have felt compelled to learn more about this subject. Conditions for pregnant women in prisons are deplorable and are extreme reflections of how women’s bodies are demeaned in our society. This mistreatment also demonstrates how our society has a hierarchy regarding the value of human life. In this hiera… Continue

The arrogance of modern humanity

It seems to be a pervasive belief among many modern humans that we are intellectually superior to our ancient ancestors. Believers of this ideal often point to the technological advancement of modern humans as evidence of this fact. But according to anthropologist, the human brain has not undergone significant evolution since the first appearance of Homo sapiens. The ancients had the same intellectual capacity as we have today. Artifacts such as the Mayan ruins and the pyramids clearly demonstra… Continue
